A Camping We Will Go...

It looks like we are going camping next weekend. Hopefully, we won't have too much rain...just some sunny weather! I am trying to come up with some ideas for food. Lindsay already got the stuff to make S'mores...what is camping without them? Do any of you have ideas for good camping food? Please give me some suggestions!

Kielbosa Sausage is good and hot dogs (if you like hot dogs). We have done chicken breast tenders (merinated) and hamburgers...this stuff would just need to be premade and kept on ice. We cook this right over the hot coals on a grate/grill rack.

We cooked steak over the fire one time. It was sorta tough, but it was good. We had a makeshift wire rack that we used, but there are probably more effective ways to accomplish it.

Hot dogs, po' boys, biscuits (canned), eggs, and bacon - just take you a pan that can be used over the fire.

Some high quality cookware is ok to use on the fire - you just have to deal with the blackness that gets on it - which can usually be cleaned off with a mild abrasive. You could use a tin can as an alternative for the eggs - if you want scrambled just crack them and drop them from a foot or so above the can so it scrambles when it falls.

You can take canned biscuits and wrap them in heavy duty aluminum foil - you have to watch them so they don't get burned on the bottom and then flip them.

Where are you guys going camping?

Oh, and if you have a cast iron dutch oven, you can make all sorts of cobbler type things. I wish I could remember the recipe for a great apple cobbler type dessert.

I'm sure the internet will be your friend and you can find a recipe somewhere. I know it involved evaporated milk, a can of fruit (pie filling) and I think canned biscuits.

gclimer is my good ol' cousin! Thanks to both of you for the great ideas! I'll let you know what we decide to do.

Geoff, we are going a week from tomorrow. Do you want to come too?

Just found this:

http://www.scoutorama.com/recipe/index.cfm

They have a lot of campfire recipes. The dutch oven ones aren't the ones I remember, I'll keep searching for the right one though.

I've found a lot of dutch oven recipes online too...I don't have a dutch oven, so those won't work.

This is the closest I can find:

Do you know anyone that has a dutch oven that you could borrow?

I would love to go camping, but I have to work :(

That scoutorama link has a bunch of non-dutch oven ideas too. So you should still check it out.

I'll ask around. I may be able to find one. If not, I'll try some other non-dutch oven recipes. Thanks!

Well, do you have to work every weekend? Perhaps we could plan another trip. Maybe we could get Amy to come too!

Cook up some bulk sausage at home. Add some cooked hashbrowns, onion and green chilies.Cool and put in a small container in your cooler. Scramble up some eggs & add the above. Take some tortilla shells, hot sauce and grated cheese and you have a great breakfast burrito.

Haha...so I can't read...

Geoff, you ask "where" we are going and not "when". We are going to the Ocoee. Derek says they have some nice camp sites there.

I left the above comment. I came in as anonymous. Lois L.

How fun! Everyone has given you great ideas! We usually just do hot dogs and hamburgers. Also make or buy cinnamon rolls and put them on the fire in the morning. We also sometimes cut up small bit size bits of steak or chicken, cut up potatoes, onions, green pepper and cheese....wrap in tin foil and place on fire. You could add as many veggies as you like. Also corn on the Cob keep the husk on and place on a rack above fire and cook until the husk is black...mmmm so good!!!! For lunch we make sandwiches with chips and salad.....

Have fun camping!! Ryan really wants to go before he moves but I don't want to with a 2 week old!! Shes not ready to do something like that!!! We took Jack when he was 2 months old!
